Special screening: Martyr of Gowanus

Set in the Brooklyn working-class neighborhood of Gowanus in 2001, Martyr of Gowanus follows a young man named Gavin (Spielberg) as he searches for connection and meaning in a rapidly changing world. While pursuing a relationship with a local Dominican girl, Mercedes, Gavin develops a friendship with her teenaged brother, Angel. The friendships are rocked in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, as local communities grapple with fear, anger, reactionary racism and uncertainty. Gavin鈥檚 sense of isolation intensifies, while Angel falls into the grip of local criminals.
INDIEWRAP, which called the film a 鈥渂old, profoundly human work,鈥 wrote: 鈥渋ts stylistic blend of fiction and real historical events sets the film apart. By incorporating footage from 9/11 and the early 2000s, the film roots its story in reality while exploring its emotional truths through narrative. The result is a unique, hybrid approach that aims to ground the viewer in time and place.鈥
The film is scheduled for theatrical release in 2027 and has taken major awards at festivals both nationally and internationally, such as Golden Door, Julien Dubuque, Clown, and Syracuse International Film Festivals.

Doors will open at 6:00 P.M.
Screenings are OVERBOOKED to ensure seating capacity in the theatre, therefore seating is not guaranteed based on RSVPs. The RSVP list will be checked in on a first-come, first-served basis until the theater is full. Once the theater has reached capacity, we will no longer be able to admit guests, regardless of RSVP status.

Parking
Free parking is available on campus. Please inform the security guard at the entrance gate that you are on campus for the ArtEx movie screening.
The Lecture Hall is located on the first floor of Main Hall at the center of campus. If you enter Main Hall at the main entrance, make a right, walk to the end of the hall and descend one level of stairs. The stairwell exit opens to the Lecture Hall lobby. If you enter Main Hall from the north-facing side entrance, (right side from the main entrance), the entrance is accessible and brings you to the Lecture Hall lobby.
